What We Do FROM SINGLE CONTAINERS TO RAISED BEDS, BIG GREEN IS HELPING HOME GARDENS SPROUT UP IN BACKYARDS AND BALCONIES ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

About the ProgramMillion Gardens

Million Gardens makes home gardening accessible to growers at any skill level, in virtually any conditions. In cohorts of 100 at a time and in partnership with deeply rooted community organizations like Brownsville Wellness Coalition, Live Healthy Miami Gardens, and The Works, we send a raised bed garden directly to people’s homes. In each deployment of the program, we ensure every gardener has a constellation of support around them to answer their questions, provide them with guidance and supplies, and most importantly, connect them with one another. As a result of Million Gardens, families are able to grow food in their backyard and serve it on their tables. Families report saving money on the cost of produce, expanding their knowledge of healthy eating, and consuming more fruits and vegetables each week.

How million gardens works

Million Gardens extended Big Green’s garden programming to families, supporting them to start a home garden and begin growing nutritious, affordable, culturally relevant food at home. We work with local organizations that are already engaged and health and wellness programs to identify new gardeners and set them up with a garden bed, soil, seeds and seedlings, and everything they need to begin growing.

  1. Partner Locally

Big Green works in collaboration with excellent local nonprofits to deliver Million Gardens, partnering with organizations who work with families, have distribution capacity, and are already offering programming to support health and nutrition.

  2. SPECIAL GARDEN DELIVERY

Gardens are delivered to homes across the city with everything a family needs to start growing. Big Green supplies garden beds or bags, soil, seeds, garden tools, and growing education in partnership with the local entity.

  3. Growing Together

We ensure every gardener has a constellation of support around them to answer their questions, provide them with guidance and supplies, and most importantly, connect them with one another. As a result of Million Gardens, families are able to grow food in their backyard and serve it on their tables. Families report saving money on the cost of produce, expanding their knowledge of healthy eating, and consuming more fruits and vegetables each week.

SINCE 2021, WE’VE DEPLOYED over 8500 GARDENS TO HOMES VIA MILLION GARDENS

Because of Million Gardens, thousands of households have begun growing food at home, reaping huge benefits for their families.

  • 2 x is the increase in the amount of vegetables kids eat when they’re homegrown
  • 68 is the average reduction in carbon emissions gained from growing food at home
  • $ 677 is the average annual savings of a home gardener on the cost of fruits and vegetables
I’m excited and more than a little amazed that I’m actually growing plants successfully! Even my tomato plant has rebounded and has blossoms on it. So far I’ve used the Greek oregano and sweet basil as natural decor for cakes. But I’m looking forward to cooking with them also. I really appreciate that your organization offered this to our Brownsville community.
