Our Approach Where community knowledge meets philanthropic investment

Our Approach

Community Trust is Our Compass.FIND

The most effective food-growing organizations in America are deeply embedded in their neighborhoods, running on relationships and lived experience, and not yet on the radar of major institutional funders. Big Green uses peer networks and community endorsement to find these leaders.

THE COMMUNITY

We Meet Organizations Where They Are.FUND & GROW

We back organizations with unrestricted funding, growing infrastructure, and spaces to co-learn from others doing the same work. We keep the process lightweight so leaders can focus on the work, not the reporting. Since 2022, we've moved over $4.5M in grants to over 200 organizations across 500+ communities, and over 20,000 physical garden beds and grow bags combined.

When Growers Network, Impact MultipliesCOMPOUND IMPACT

Our grantees are part of a living network of farmers, educators, and community food leaders. Once granted by Big Green, organizations are invited into the Big Green Community to share techniques, co-design solutions, and learn from each other across geography, so that what works in one community can take root in another.

One portfolio. Hundreds of data points.SHOW PROOF

Because Big Green works across a national portfolio of organizations doing similar work in different contexts, we can see patterns that no single funder or organization could identify alone. We share that intelligence openly, helping the broader philanthropic community make better decisions about where and how to invest in food systems.

IMPACT

Community-centered funding can transform systems far beyond food.
