Big Green is offering two unique grant opportunities to support Charleston’s local food movement. The Community Garden Grant provides materials like garden beds, soil, and irrigation kits to help community growers expand access to fresh, healthy food. The Grow Local Grant offers $10,000–$30,000 in unrestricted funding to support local leaders strengthening food production and distribution. You can apply for one or both grants. If applying for both, you must fill out each application.

Charleston Community Garden Grant

Big Green is providing garden beds and soil for food growing, irrigation systems where possible, and simple installation guidance with ongoing support from Big Green as needed. This grant is intended to solely provide infrastructure so that Charleston communities can grow more food while strengthening local resilience and connection. Charleston-based nonprofits looking to build or expand community garden sites are encouraged to apply. Schools are not eligible for this opportunity.

Charleston Grow Local Grant

The Grow Local Grant offers unrestricted funding to support your work in growing and distributing affordable, fresh food across the Charleston community. Grants will range from $10,000–$30,000 and include access to a peer network of local growers and food system leaders. Grassroots, community-based organizations working to expand local food production or distribution in the Charleston metro area are encouraged to apply.

Who Can Apply

To be eligible for a Big Green grant, applicants must:

  • Be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in good standing.

  • Eligible entities may include—but are not limited to—community gardens, urban farms, food distribution centers, or faith-based organizations leading local food access or education projects.

  • Demonstrate meaningful community engagement and a clear commitment to equitable access to healthy, affordable, and culturally relevant food.

  • Operate within the Charleston metropolitan area.

  • Preference will be given to organizations serving historically disinvested or food-insecure communities.
