Indianapolis Learning Garden Workshops 2019-2020

Seed Starting Workshop:

February 12, 2020, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Join the Big Green Indy program team at our office to learn about the materials and skills needed to start seeds in your classroom. We’ll also practice those skills starting lettuce and scallion seeds for the Learning Gardens. Everyone will go home with links to lessons and activities for incorporating seed starting in your classroom. We’re also offering a limited number of classroom seed starting kits at $10 each. Kits are valued at over $50 and include seed trays, a desktop grow light, soil, amendments and some seeds.

Fall Harvest & Winter Prep Workshop:

October 2, 2019, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Each season in the Learning Garden presents new opportunities and challenges.Join us on Wednesday October 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at South Grove Intermediate School in Beech Grove to go over everything from pop-corn to sweet potatoes to leafy greens. This workshop will cover the skills you need when harvesting fall crops with students, and offer ideas for how to store and use your produce. We’ll also give tips on how to best protect your garden over the winter so you’re set for success in the spring. Back to School Workshop:

August 14, 2019, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Whether your Learning Garden is bursting with fruits and veggies or has yet to be Kicked-Off, Big Green has got you covered with our Back to School Learning Garden Workshop. Join us Wednesday, August 14 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Thomas Gregg Neighborhood School where we will review all you need to know as you return to school and your Learning Garden. In addition to introducing some new and exciting activities that we can bring to your school this year, we’ll also cover:

  • What’s ready to harvest and what’s coming up.
  • Refresh on how to harvest, store, and prepare your summer crops with students.
  • Practice planting methods for fall crops.
  • Ways the Learning Garden can help you bring your classroom lessons to life.

For any new Garden Team members, we will go over Learning Garden basics, and as always, there will be guided group discussion for peer sharing and learning. Everyone who attends our workshop will automatically be entered to win one of several great prizes!
