It is National School Lunch Week and Farm to School Month!
In celebration of National School Lunch Week, Big Green is partnering with LAUSD Food Services to celebrate and highlight garden crops and the yummy local food that LAUSD Food Services and Gold Star Foods work hard to bring to students’ plates. School gardens bring the story of food to life and allow students to experience and understand where their food came from. For this special week in select schools, we decided to highlight a crop–cucumbers–and walk students through the seed to plate process.
All week, Big Green staff have been traveling school to school and garden to garden to lead students in the planting and exploration of cucumber crops. Students have been discussing what they’ve learned and tasted from the garden so far, drawing from their own garden to table experiences.
Afterwards, chefs demonstrated how to prepare those cucumbers in a delicious salad! Students got to participate and taste a new cucumber salad recipe and cucumber agua frescas. During lunch, LAUSD Food Services feature and serve the same cucumber salad for the entire school!
While getting their lunch, students visit the Gold Star Foods mini-food stand where they can taste local California-grown fruits and vegetables. Persimmons, multi-colored carrots, and other unique crops are available for kids to taste!
The cucumber salad will be available to all schools later in the year so keep a lookout! We hope to continue running seed to plate activities with our amazing partners throughout the year. If your school was not selected, there’s always a chance you might be selected soon!
