Partner Spotlight: Johnny’s Selected Seeds

Get to know longtime friends of Big Green, Johnny’s Selected Seeds. They’re responsible for pretty much every plant growing in Learning Gardens across the country by generously donating all of the seeds kids plant every year. We sat down with them to find out more about what they do best–helping growers like our Learning Garden students succeed!

Big Green: Why does Johnny’s Selected Seeds choose to support Big Green?

Johnny’s Selected Seeds: Our mission is helping families, friends, and communities to feed one another by providing superior seeds, tools, information, and service. In our collaboration with Big Green, we see a natural alignment of missions. We also support Big Green’s effort to teach young people that a vegetable garden can be grown anywhere, even in the middle of a food desert.

Big Green: Tell us more about the seeds we’re planting in our Learning Gardens nationwide. Our seeds are bred and tested to perform well above Federal Seed Act standards across a range of conditions across the country.

Johnny’s Selected Seeds: The selection of seeds planted in Big Green Learning Gardens often contain different varieties in order to match region and growing season. In other words, students in L.A. might be tending sweet corn while students in Chicago are planting spinach, and so forth.

Big Green:What makes Johnny’s Selected Seeds unique?

Johnny’s Selected Seeds: Johnny’s is 100% Employee owned, and many of us are farmers and gardeners with decades of hands-on experience in the field. This means that every single one of us is committed to giving growers superior seeds, supplies, and the knowledgeable support necessary to thrive. Whether it is a class of students in Detroit, a small family farm in Nebraska, or a home garden in Georgia, we want growers to succeed.

Big Green: Real food is a huge part of Big Green’s mission and work. How would Johnny’s Selected Seeds define “Real Food?”

Johnny’s Selected Seeds: If you read about the Real Food Movement from any number of online or print sources, the common definition of “Real Food” is food that has been grown and raised, not manufactured and processed. While we may not have an official definition of “Real Food” at Johnny’s, the term pretty much describes what our customers end up with at harvest time!

Big Green:Is there anything else you’d like to share with our supporters?

Johnny’s Selected Seeds: The hands-on experience of growing and tasting food is unique and cannot be replicated. Giving children an opportunity to share that experience with family and community is the key to a healthier future. Johnny’s is proud to participate in this effort with Big Green.
