Learning Garden schools have excelled in adopting innovative approaches to facilitate education using the gardens. With the development of the new Garden Bites program in partnership with the Walmart Foundation and Common Threads, schools who have demonstrated a capacity and passion to utilize their gardens in the classroom will receive support through the advent of a standards-aligned curriculum to take the learning a step further!
Garden Bites is 16-lesson curriculum for pre-K through 8th grade students focusing on nutrition, (knife-free) healthy cooking and gardening skills. The 8, hour-long nutrition lessons were generated by our partner Common Threads and are grade specific. The 8 accompanying hour-long garden lessons created by Big Green are grade banded for pre-K through 2nd grade, 3rd through 5th grade, and 6th through 8th grade.
Schools will be selected based on their demonstrated ability to plant and harvest their Learning Gardens independently and incorporate the Learning Garden into the classroom and school culture. Dedicated Garden Bites Educators from select schools will receive guidance from Big Green Garden Educators as well as a 2 hour professional development workshop to aid in the implementation of the program. The lessons are aligned to National Health Education Standards, Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards.
Through Garden Bites, students are able to connect math, language arts and science concepts to hands-on experiences that provide them with tools to live longer, healthier lives. Graduates of the program will be able to prepare healthy snacks and develop basic, flexible cooking skills and learn how food grows by growing their own!
